a Quando è seguito dalla forma in -ing, to regret indica rincrescimento o rammarico: I regret refusing (o having refused) their offer, mi pento di aver rifiutato la loro offerta; He didn't regret changing his mind, non si pentì di aver cambiato idea; I regret leaving so early, mi rincresce andarmene così presto.
b to regret + infinito con to si usa perlopiù seguito da verbi come to inform, to announce, to say, to tell ecc., quando si devono comunicare notizie negative: We regret to inform you that you are not entitled to a refund, siamo spiacenti di informarla che Lei non ha diritto al rimborso; I regret to tell you that we cannot accept your offer, siamo spiacenti di non poter accettare la Sua offerta; purtroppo non possiamo accettare la Sua offerta.
